Ever since I moved into my rental I have wanted a settee or couch in my kitchen. I thought if I had a vintage settee/couch in my kitchen it would bring some vintage character to my 80's style rental. My kitchen is a GREAT size and when I just had a table and four chair it felt boring, like it was missing something. I am so happy that I was able to find such a great piece of furniture at such a free price.

I don't know about y'all but I am so lovin' the black! Honestly no other color would have done it for me. I did not even have to think twice about this one!
When deciding on what fabric painting method I was going to attempt, the thought of paint being pliable kept running through my mind. See, the last time I painted some fabric I mixed fabric medium into my paint and I wasn't really satisfied with my outcome. My chair (I painted the fabric on it) came out crunchy and not very soft to the touch. I knew that I did not want that. I also knew that latex paint is bendable, why not just slap that baby on there? Before I even applied any paint on the couch, I searched endlessly for some type of diy or after photo of a painted couch without using any type of fabric medium and I came across Magnaverde's painted sofa...even her sofa was similar to mine. Finding that article was like the weight of the world was being lifted off my shoulders....I felt like I could breathe!

To achieve a faux leather look on a couch using paint all you have to do is:

1. Thoroughly clean the piece
2. Paint it and paint it and paint it, it took me probably 4 coats to get it to where it is now.
3. Let it dry and cure
4. Magnaverde finished her piece off with some form of wax paste, but since I have kids and this couch would be located in the kitchen, an area where there is food and hand touching, I decided to skip this stage.

The couch is 100% wipeable and comfortable! it does not even feel like a painted couch. It is NOT sticky when you sit on it or anything like that. I love the fact that if my kids spill anything on it, I can just wipe it off and not have to deal with throwing it in the wash or busting out my steam cleaner....painting it was the best choice I could have thought of that could resist my kids.

Man, does that not look nice?

  1. You go girl. lol It looks absolutely gorgeous. I am going to try this method in a few days. Question did you wet it down first or watered down the paint?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Hi Jessica, I have just come into possession of a free camel back sofa and wing chair and would love to reupholster them. But...being newly retired and on a VERY limited income I can't afford a good fabric. I found your blog and your painted black sofa. May I ask a couple of questions? You said you used latex paint. What kind, interior wall paint? What finish...semi gloss? Did you spray or brush the paint onto the sofa? Was he sofa wet or dry when you painted it. Thank you in advance for your help. I am really excited to get started!! By the way, my name is Connie and I have been reading your blogs and looking at all your decor and projects...you are VERY talented. Thanks again
