Good morning and happy Monday! I do not know about you, but I am ready for Spring. The sun has been shining happily over us and although the temperatures have been in the 50's, it feels super warm to me. I guess that is what happens when one day you are in an ice storm and the next you are in Spring-like weather. haha! Something happens when you are cooped in the house with 3 children...you get busy with work...well, I do. I spent last Monday (when we had the ice storm) painting my entry way table. I wanted to make a statement but was not fully sold on the idea of adding color into the space. Sometimes making a statement means having a standout (interesting) piece and not necessarily a BRIGHT, vibrant piece that screams look at me. I whole-heartedly believe this. I like color, but I find my self at a lost when it comes to painting decent size furniture in color...for the simple reason that I am indecisive and love to change my home around ALOT.
I know what you are thinking..."what am I talking about?"---you see the red and are probably confused at where I am going. Well, folks....After I completed my dining room, I told myself the next space to occupy my time would be the foyer...so far, not much has happened. I really wanted to keep my small foyer which opens up to the "quiet room" aka formal living room clean, and at a minimal with just an entry way table and some decor pieces. In all honesty...no one touches this table or puts anything on it. It is most certainly not a landing spot in my home.
Okay, back to my story...As I was setting out to paint this rattan table in BLACK I was running into problems, the paint was not adhering well and looked more grey than the sleek, sexy black that I was envisioning. After looking at the disgust of a paint job that was going on, I decided that I was going to paint it using DecoArt Americana Rouge Chalk Paint. Trust me, I was hesitant...but after testing out a few coats of the paint on the back of my table, I was sold...there was no turning back. Before I post any DIY's I have to love it, if I do not love it...knowing me, it will get redone right then and there. This piece guys...is something I love.
This is how the table used to look. You probably remember when I had this table in my hall in my last place. I never thought anything was wrong with the color, so I really never thought of painting it until a few weeks ago. I really wanted this table to speak to me and fit more in line with what is going on in my new house. I really do not decorate with grey, so I knew that I would have to change that. I also knew that I have been feeling the cranberry/wine color so that is why I decided to get the color Rouge from the Deco Art. When I decided on this color I was hoping that it would give off a moody feel to my entry way without taking away from whatever season it is....do you get my drift? Normally, moody, dark colors are used in the Fall, but with this house, I would love to incorporate it into a year-around color theme and switch out accessories when needed.
This is the color up close--no filtering, no photoshop, just me and my camera. What I love about this color is that it is not an in your face red. It has a pink undertone, but since my piece was dark to begin with it made it more subtle and more cranberry-ish--in my opinion. The chalk paint was GREAT to work with and just might be one of my favorite paints. It went on effortlessly and dried quickly. The paint was great, the piece was work!
This was a big job, painting something like this---rattan, detailed, and not paint brush friendly, but I think I did it. I made a statement that stays in tune with my style without it being in your face. You walk into my home and are greeted by nice table with collected items. The statement my piece makes says, I like color, I like clean, I like simple, I like gathered, I like eclectic...and that is the only statement it needs to make. This table is a representation of me and although I was hesitant to go outside of my comfort zone and paint something this bold, I am happy that I did...because I am bold and edgy and this table kicks butt and looks so cool!
This is my statement piece in my home, what pieces do you use to make a statement in your home?

Looks great! I've never been much of a red person (or warm color person in general, really - my home is mostly blues and greens), but red has been growing on me and I love that shade. It's perfect with that painting and rug! And you know I love a statement.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I too, have never been a "red" kind of girl, but I have been loving this color lately.

DeleteI love all colors, currently I use pops of red here and there. It is such an energetic fun color! this hue is nice and subdued with coral undertones I really like it! I love to change things up frequently myself.
ReplyDeleteMe and you alike! Thanks Brenda for stopping by.
DeleteVery cool Jess. Those type of pieces are hard to paint! Major credit to you! Such a warm and welcoming table. And you're right, it's not a red, in your face... Which is nice and different.
ReplyDeleteThanks girl! This table was a mad beast and every time I thought I painted the WHOLE piece...I was wrong. Next time I will be spray painting a piece this intricate.
