I have never been one to shy away from stating that depending on my home (not my personal style) the way I decorate will vary. I believe that no two homes are alike and that it would be close to impossible for me to recreate an existing room without listening to the whispers of my new home. With every home I live in my style evolves, it is not by choice, it just happens. The bones of the house are different, the lighting is not the same, the functions and aesthetic features change. I have never understood how other decorators can move to another home just to recreate what they created in their last home. There is no growth there, ideas are old and worn. I am not shooting anyone down, nor do I have any names to mention, just observation. This has been weighting on my heart as changes are going to occur over here at Domicile 37.

  1. I've only been recently following along, but I'm intrigued by the thoughts you've been having and how it will be reflected in the changes that are to come. I've always believed that a home should reflect the people who live there (personality, stage in life, lifestyle, etc.), as much as the architecture of the home. I'm excited to see your home evolve... Btw, I love that painting!

    1. Thanks! The print is from society 6 https://society6.com/product/let-go-c5y_print#1=45 ---I totally agree with you. I too believe that a home does reflect the people who live there, personality and everything.

  2. Valid point you made here. Our home is 100 years old and finding the right balance is challenging. You're right about homes speaking to you. I look forward to seeing how you create a new look for your home

  3. Jess, I have been trying to put into words this very though! Especially with moving to a new home, I am really dwelling on the idea that I can't just come in and impose my previous style - I need to be still and listen to what THIS house wants to be! It sounds a little crazy when I try to say it, but YES, I get it!!!

  4. Thanks girl! The love is always appreciated!

  5. I couldn't agree more! I have a VERY specific style in my home and I love it, but it only works in this home. The dark, moody colors that I think look great in our small Victorian house wouldn't look right in a big, lofty, modern home. You can have the best taste in the world, but if you don't respect the space you're in it's never going to look quite right.

  6. Every time we move, the old furniture doesn't ever seem to "fit" the new space. Not just the size but the way it feels. This house feels more Spanish-y. I feel pretty okay with replacing everything because most of it is thrift store finds, which I either give away or sell on Craigslist. I tell my husband it's my way to give back.
