The One Room Challenge is finally over and if you missed my post on it, you can check it out, here. I showed off how I took my family room from a lodge-like 80's rental to an eclectic collected glam space. I plan to also highlight some of my favorite One Room Challenge Makeovers, so be on the lookout for that. In the meanwhile, it is the third Tuesday of the month...so you know what that means...Inspired by DIY. This month we are channeling our inner Eddie Ross and create a vignette to help us with that. Due to pregnancies (not me) and life we will have interchanging guest participants.  Arielle from Scotch and Nonsense, Sarah from Homeology Modern Vintage, and Maggie from Maggie Overby Studios are our guest host for this month. Please give them a warm welcome by sending some love to them. They all have a fun, but different eclectic styles. I am so pumped for this post and I cannot wait to how Eddie Ross has inspired all of our host.

The one thing I absolutely love about Eddie Ross is that he is a hardworking man and he has WORKED for what success he has. One of my favorite quotes in his book is,

"Not all of us were born with a silver spoon in our mouths but we can pretend, can't we?"

---I surely can!!!! Y'all know it! This is by far not a promotional post, but I will admit, his book Modern Mix is my favorite of all my design books. It is filled with tips galore and there is a story behind everything he collects, which I love. The history behind a second hand piece holds more value then any splurge I made at a big box store. I truly appreciate his style and charisma. He is truly one of a kind when it comes to designers. I do not plan to beans in terms of tips from his book, you will have to read his book to get all his secrets, but I will share with you 5 tips that I have observed from reading his book.

1. Layer

Some people do this really well, some don't even try, others don't really like it....but I believe that layering decor can make all of the difference when you are decorating your space, your table, your walls, etc.... When it comes to your space, start with the largest item and work your way to the smallest. If you are putting a table setting together start with the center and work your way out...but do not forget your tablecloth. Some may think tablecloths are out of date, but they can make a HUGE difference if you are trying to create a scene. Do you know what I mean?

When I was putting this table together, I pulled out three different table cloths, a plain one, a shimmery one with sequence (I know a little over the top, eh?), and this one. I knew off the bat that I was going to go with this one due to the color and pattern. Although some of my pieces have pattern, this tablecloth was NOT too busy to mix and match into the scheme. It was just right!

I chose clear glassware over colored so that it did not take away from the patterns and textures or make my table feel heavy. Sometimes a heavy dosage of color can bog a space down. However, I layered my plates with textured silver plated chargers, white textured plate, and a blush pink floral embossed plate to play off of the Chinoiserie pieces in the space.

2. Just because it is old and beat down does NOT mean there is no more life left in it

If you look closely at my silver chargers, some of them are stainless steel others are silver plated and rusted but not in horrible condition. They just have a speck of rust here and there. That imperfection does not mean they are not useable, it just means they are limited edition. LOL....they have character. If you can look past the imperfection when second hand shopping you can score some treasures. To be honest, almost everything I share with you has some type of flaw and that what makes it special.

What I realized while flipping through my Modern Mix book is that nothing is perfect. Eddie Ross's book is outlined with gorgeous rooms and home decor pieces, but what makes it stunning and over the top is that most of the items are kept in the condition that it was found. Obviously, it is broken he took time to get it fixed. Some of his silver pieces have rust, some of the fabric he displays are a little sun kissed, some are dated, and nothing is really perfectly symmetrical, but everything flows nicely together. What I am saying is to have a nicely curated space or what not, it does not have to perfectly planned out. You do not have to use all of the same element (elements = wood, lucite, brass, ceramic, etc...)

3. Mix different elements

To get the right balance when decorating, I STRONGLY believe you need to mix different elements. Sometimes when you have too much of the same thing going on in a space it gets boring. I believe this to be true when decorating your space and vignettes, tablescapes, holiday decorating, etc...

One of Eddie's signature moves is to use colored glassware in tablescapes. A cup is not just a cup to him, it is art! The details in a piece of glassware should be put in display and not hidden. Thank goodness for thrift stores, because you know they always have a handful of china, glassware, depression glass, and other kitchen items that can glam up your space. Another beautifully expressed quote from Eddie Ross is,

"When it comes to colorful glassware, don't just make a statement. Make an EXCLAMATION POINT"

Do not be afraid to mix and match metals, or different wood species, or patterns and finishes. Something that I am asked a lot is, I need to use xyz wood in my space because I already have xyz wood. Individuals who have asked me for decorating advice are typically afraid to mix and match, when in actuality too much of the same thing is not so good, if you know what I mean. I am always trying to convince people to go for the non traditional couch and to pair it with with a non matching accent chair. These are typically the questions I get asked but pertaining to different spaces. What I want to say is, there is nothing wrong with stepping out of your comfort zone, you might actually like it.

4. Think outside the box - Decorating does not have to be so perfect

This goes hand in hand with tip number 3. When something is too perfect, it sometimes (in my opinion) is boring and lifeless. Hence, these are just my opinions. Eddie's style is very much of that of a Maximalist. He likes to...

"Acquire chic vintage and new finds that add personality to your home."

As a decorator, I am not saying you have to buy everything second hand in order for you to add personality to your space, but when purchasing an item think about why you want it and what makes it unique. I personally believe that my "found" treasures bring out the best in my space and are so unique that they make a statement with out me even bringing attention to them. Most maximalist and those with eclectic spaces decorate their space with their heart, the items displayed have meaning, purpose, and add is an expression of who they are.

 5. Greenery makes everything a little bit prettier

Take it from me, when flipping through your favorite home decor book the one thing each designer has in common is there space always has some type of greenery. Greenery makes your home feel alive and can freshen up a space. You can sense that in pictures as well. Plants and flowers always make things look prettier.

Well, these are my tips on how to create the perfect inspired by Eddie Ross space. I hope you have a wonderful day and be sure to check out my gals to see how Eddie has inspired them.

  3. What a lovely space, Jess! You pulled together such a gorgeous mix - it's hard to choose a favorite part, but it's a toss up between those pink candles and the little porcelain Asian figure with the fan... Or wait, is it the Chinoiserie bowl, or the patterned tablecloth? ;) Too hard to decide!

    1. thanks! that little Asian figure was one of those thrift store finds that I could not pass up. I found a wooden bust-like statue of an Asian lady at the thrift store back in late December that I really wanted and the mister was totally not on board he literally talked me out of it...I miss her til this day. I think I made up for it with this figurine. lol. Thanks again Brynne!

  5. Love the collected look and it's so easy for those of us on a budget.(I want you little geisha by the way)this looks so good. I have never been one for collecting dishes but lately I have been keeping my eye out for some that would mix well with my everyday Mikasa San Marco dinnerware I got years ago for my wedding. Maybe one day I can mix and match like Eddie...
