Happy Monday!

Brass nailhead DIY on furniture, Decorative nailhead trim

In the last post I created I mentioned that "the nailhead" topic was leading up to something. Well, after much consideration, I decided to apply a decorative nailhead trim to my lovely red sofa. We all remember what it looked like before, right? Well...this is a huge upgrade. The gold has grown on me. I will be very transparent---I ordered the wrong finish and did not realize it until I was halfway done with the couch. I was so excited that the trim kit came in that I did not even realize that it is was the wrong finish. I know, silly me! Anyways, it is growing on me, I like it more and more as the days go by.

My original plan for the couch was to adhere a decorative fabric trim to the bottom of the couch, either in plain black or in greek key. I thought it would look nice. However, after much consideration the mister and I decided for resale value the decorative nailhead trim would be a better selling feature if we decide to sale it sometime down the road.

Materials:

The main material you will need is a decorative nailhead trim kit. You can purchase individual nailheads or the actual trim. I purchased 10 yards brass nailhead trim kit. I used a regular hammer to hammer the nails in but the correct hammer needed for this product is a mallet hammer, which is shown below. To cut the trim if too long, just use a wire cutter or metal cutter. Either should work fine.

Steps:

Before doing anything, you may want to put some leather gloves on (optional)---this is just a warning, but I will inform you that if you do not wear some type of finger protection your fingers will get little cuts and nits from the metal trim.

I rolled out a few feet worth of trim and placed the trim directly over the last imprint of where a nail (or staple) was located and I hammered in a nailhead attached to the trim on the backside of my sofa. I followed the imprint all the way around my couch. Once I got to the end of the couch where my trim work meets together I cut the trim off with a metal cutter.

Follow the pictures below for an understanding of what occurred.

This is how the trim looks as you are applying it around the rim of the couch. Since it is a lightweight piece of metal it is easily bendable and can take form fast.

This is the way I hammered my nails in along the rim of my couch. This type of hammer is not recommended and will actually scratch the nailhead, but since I did not have a mallet hammer, I had to make do.

I also attempted to use an eraser as a barrier so that my nails would not get dinged up when I hammer it. This technique did work to some degree, but it made the whole nailhead installment process take longer than what it needed to take.

Pretty and simple, eh? This project cost me $25 and took me approximately an hour to complete. Please keep in mind that you can purchase a trim kit cheaper if you need less yardage or if you choose a different finish....the possibilities of what you can do with nailheads are endless.

Finish product....I know it is just a teaser, but I plan to reveal my whole living room in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful Monday!
