CRUSHIN' ART: Cutting Edge Stencil (Review and Giveaway)
May 29, 2015
**Cutting Edge Stencil did provide me with the stencil free of charge, but the opinions are all my own**
Hello and Happy Friday!
Recently, Cutting Edge Stencil contacted me and asked me to do a product review on one of the many stencils they offer, my choice on style however. There were soOOOOOooo many stencils to choose from, I literally was oohing and awwing...I could not make up my mind because I could see all the different possibilities.
When deciding on a stencil, I had to keep in mind that I am renter and whatever I used the stencil on was not going to go directly on the wall and would more likely be created into some type of art piece. With a small plan in mind, I chose to review the Charlotte Allover Stencil.
This was everything that was sent to me. The stencil, a foam roller, a stencil leveler, and a specialty stenciling brush. Since this project was created as an art piece I only used the stencil and the stencil paint brush from the kit. All the materials used for this project are listed below.
Materials:
Stencil
Stencil brush
Paint-Valspar Du Jour, Martha Stewart Yellow Gold Craft Paint
Surface to paint on--I used leftover hardboard finished with Valspar White Enamel paint
Modge Podge
Gold Leaf
An extra paint brush that is dry
*fine tip paint brush
You will need some sort of surface to apply your art on, I used leftover hardboard from one of my previous projects and painted it white using Valspar Enamel paint. You can always use old art, canvas, or plywood and paint the surface (base) in a color of your choice. After you have found a surface that you would like to apply this project to, find the middle of each edge of the stencil. I taped mine off and drew a line on the tape of where the middle is located. I also, found the middle and center of the surface of the hardboard so that I can line up the middle edges of my stencil to the middle of my surface. After "centering" the stencil to the center of my hardboard, I secured the stencil using tape.
*NOTE: Normally, I would not apply masking tape to hardboard because it will damage it, but since the board was painted with an enamel based paint it did not damage the piece at all--probably the effects of the gloss finish.
After the stencil is secure, paint the three circles going down the middle with the color of your choice along with the leaves on the outside of the circle. Painting the outer parts of the circle will help mark the pattern so you do not mess up. You will continue to move across the board painting this stencil until you cannot stencil no more.
I love gold as an accent color, so I did this step using Martha Stewart craft paint in yellow gold and Valspar Du Jour paint with a satin finish (one of the sample paints will do just fine). I chose this color gold because it was the closest gold paint that I owned that was similar in color to gold leaf. If you plan to recreate this, gold and all, feel free to simplify this project by using liquid gold or gold rub and buff for the extra sheen.
**The next couple of steps are optional. If you want to stop here and call it day, you can. Although this stencil is beautiful, I chose to apply gold leaf to this project to give this piece dimension and interest.
After the paint dries, place the stencil on top of the gold circles (or what I would call Medallions) and apply modge podge to the stencil. Modge podge dries fast so I tried to do this as quick as possible. Then grab your gold leaf sheets and apply it to it and push down on it so that it sticks but not too hard...OR you can apply modge podge to each detail of the gold stencil with a fine tip paint brush and apply gold leaf scraps to the areas that have modge podge...*I know this part is complicated to explain.*
After the modge podge dries and the gold leaf is settle, brush off the extra gold leaf. When I did this step the gold leaf did not adhere to the whole detailed area and I had to use a fine tip paint brush and modge podge and apply the gold leaf to the areas that needed it.
Once I felt like I was satisfied with the amount of gold leaf on this piece, I sealed the gold leaf with modge podge so that it will not peel off. Once the modge podge sealant dries place art work in a frame...and Voila...instant, beautiful, homemade art with the help of Cutting Edge Stencil.
I really do not have anything negative to say about this stencil...It was easy to use, a reasonable size, and easy to clean. NO Problems here!
GUESS WHAT?...Not only did I share my thoughts about this stencil with all of you, but I have the opportunity to host a give away on this stencil. Yep, I said it...a give away!
